‘I am sorry if I am making you play musical chairs here,’ I laugh as I chat to Regan over video call. As an artist who lives in Saskatchewan, a province located deep within the vast Prairies of the Canadian hinterlands some 4,000 miles from where I live in the UK, Regan’s internet connection can be a bit fuzzy at times. ‘No problem, I always pace around when I talk anyway,’ Regan chuckles in his friendly Canadian accent, as he wanders around the room trying to find a better signal.
After a short while Regan sits at his table, where fortunately the signal becomes clearer. Now, not only does his face come into view, but also numerous others! Displaying a variety of quirky and colourful etchings, these faces that adorn –or seemingly protrude from – Regan’s wall are human, but not quite. I started this interview believing that he solely made free-standing sculptures, also known as ‘sculptures in the round’, though now I am starting to wonder whether he created these masks too.
