PORT TALBOT STEELWORKS BY ANDREW VICARI

When thinking of a painting or a piece of art I could write about, my mind wandered. I could have chosen to write about Roman sculptures, or brilliant heirlooms with the stories behind them. Instead, I've chosen a painting from a world-renowned artist that's from just around the corner, Andrew Vicari.

This painting by Andrew Vicari captures Port Talbot steel works, the industrial hub of the area.

The steel works has been the centre of the surrounding area since its construction in 1901, and it is arguably South Wales' most noticeable landmark (after the Principality Stadium)

The steel works through the night can be argued to take the outline of a castle or fortress defending the area. The chimneys stand tall and proud like towers that can be seen for miles up the Neath and Afan valleys; even across Swansea Bay in Mumbles, it's a constant sight. This painting by Vicari symbolises something important to me; we're told as admirers that art is subjective, but this sight that Vicari draws upon is an exception. For the thousands that live in South Wales and pass this bleak, burning structure, it tells them that they're nearly home.
