Ever since he can remember, Brian Prouton has been keen to illustrate the objects that feature in the world around him. Whether they are on a screen, a museum or perched on top of a centuries old wall. Working best from his room with his headphones on, he uses pen and ink to create mainly black and white pointillist artworks. What appeals to Brian about this form of artwork however, is how it can be used to create such great contrasts and densities. Yet the tones in which his work appear also reflect how they are developed-‘almost like a printer’, he explains. Since each work he creates undergoes a ‘pass’: the light tones; the minutia (like these hyena claws) and finally the darker tones for density.
‘A single dot by itself means absolutely nothing, but all of a sudden, when you spread them out across a page in various densities, you can build an image with such rich depth.’
