Wire Figures by James Mellor
My Artwork consists of vibrant lights that not only draw viewers in but give shape to various mystery figures. The background represents a void, adding a sense of beauty to the light source, yet it also may evoke amongst viewers a sense of horror.
The work is furthermore somewhat autobiographical, for I wanted to create something that depicted my mental health; a contrast between light and darkness; my struggle between staying focused (such as how one may focus on the light) and by feeling like an obstacle (the figurative piece).
I sincerely hope that modern art, such as my own, inspires viewers to look at their identity from perhaps a more spiritual angle and in doing so be kinder to those around them.
Using a projector to light up my figures, I carefully consider what colour wiring to use. I like to think that Purple for instance, represents passion and love, particularly as I find that it provides a softness to the figure, especially as it is placed around its heart.
What the figures themselves actually are however, I leave open to question; be them humans, humanoids or insects.
In conclusion, wire to me as an art form is most intriguing, since, similarly to how a butterfly experiences metamorphosis, it can be shaped and altered not only through our hands but by using other mediums - which in this case it is the light and the dark.
