Tomos Watkin: The Art of Capturing Life Through Pencil Portraits

A Welsh speaker from Aberystwyth, Tomos is a pencil artist that likes to capture ‘the moment’ in his designs. Although he has always had a keen eye for art generally, having studied it both in school and later on in college, his interest took a new turn during lockdown. Much like those days, Tomos and I are having our discussion online, and, like his sketching, my camera decides to show me in an ever-changing black and white tone. In contrast to how I am portrayed in my seemingly faulty screen however, there's nothing scary about Tomos' artwork!

Once firmly interested in concept digital art, namely cartoons, Tomos decided to use his spare time in lockdown to refine his skills as a more traditional artist; using pencils to intricately sketch realistic pieces.

'I try and capture that moment'

Celebrities consistently feature as the primary figures in Tomos' artwork - you do not need to seek anything out because they are drawn exactly as we see them. Yet there is key reason for this. Underneath his realistic designs lies a deeper sense of realism - he captures a moment in time; for we may see Cavani celebrate, but much like a camera, Tomos immortalises that split second for us.
